You have a website, a script or an internal system that needs fixes, and every change waits on a developer who is not always around. Claude Code reads your whole codebase, edits files, runs commands and handles git from plain-language instructions, in the terminal, your editor, a desktop app or the browser.
Who this is NOT for
It is not for you if your business has no code of its own. It is built to work inside a software project folder, and for writing, summarizing or thinking a regular AI chat does the job with nothing to install. Do not start either if nobody on your team can review what it changes: it runs real commands on your machine, and someone has to understand what they are approving. And if your code or data cannot leave the office, note this: the README says it collects usage data and associated conversation data. Look at local AI instead.
What sets it apart from an AI chat is that it acts: it does not suggest a change for you to paste, it edits the files and runs the commands. That is why the classic mistake is treating it like a chat and approving everything unread. Review every change before keeping it, and work on a git copy until you trust it. Two facts worth knowing: the repo had activity today and has over 12,000 open issues and PRs, so it is a live product that changes fast. And GitHub detects no license on the repo, so do not assume it is open source.
Your first step
Install it with curl -fsSL https://claude.ai/install.sh | bash on Mac or Linux, or irm https://claude.ai/install.ps1 | iex in Windows PowerShell. Then open a copy of your project, type claude and ask it to explain what the code does before asking for any change.
