Good coding agents come with a subscription and welded-shut parts: you choose neither the model nor the behavior. DeepSeek Harness is open source and everything inside is a plugin — the model, the tools, the memory and even the agent loop can be swapped for your own. Over 209 thousand GitHub stars and an ecosystem of 13 thousand community plugin repos.
Who this is NOT for
It is in developer preview and they say it plainly: there will be compatibility-breaking changes. If you need a stable production tool today, this is not it yet. And an agent with access to your terminal and files deserves a read of its safety notice before you let it loose.
It grew from 180 to 209 thousand stars in ten days — the ecosystem is moving there. The plugin architecture is the interesting bet: instead of waiting for the vendor to add a feature, the community has already published thousands (including one that operates your browser). It installs and opens with a single command.
Your first step
Install Node.js and run npx @deepseek-ai/dsh web — the interface opens in your browser at 127.0.0.1:3080. Set your API key in Settings → Models and ask it to summarize one of your repos.
The DeepSeek Harness implementation guide
The project belongs to DeepSeek AI and it is free: the link beside asks for nothing. The guide to set it up without getting lost is ours: step by step, common mistakes and a checklist. Leave your email and we will send it.
