You have a hundred product photos shot on the shop counter, and your catalog or online store wants them without the background. Cutting them out by hand eats the week, and cutout apps tend to charge per image. Rembg removes backgrounds on your own computer, one photo or a whole folder at a time, and it can watch that folder and cut out every new photo you drop in.
Who this is NOT for
If you have never opened a terminal or installed anything with pip, this is not for you: there is no point-and-click app you install with a double click. Its README asks for Python 3.11 to 3.13, and you drive it with commands. If you cut out three photos a month, do not install anything and keep using whatever cutout app you already have. It also only removes the background: no shadows, no retouching, no final composition. You still need your usual editor for that.
What sets it apart from paid apps is not the quality of a single photo, it is the folder mode: `rembg p -w` watches an input folder, and anyone on the team gets a cutout just by dropping a photo there. Funny detail: the README's sponsor is PhotoRoom, which sells exactly a background-removal API. The typical mistake is turning on `-a` (alpha matting) for everything so it comes out "better". The README itself says that for hard edges like products, logos or cars, the default mode is enough, and that for batches you should prefer `-dc`, which is faster and cannot fail. Save `-a` or `-vm` for portraits where the hair gets lost. The repo is alive: last push on October 10, 2026, and only 2 open issues or PRs.
Your first step
Run pip install "rembg[cpu, cli]", then rembg i photo.jpg photo-no-bg.png on a real photo of your product. If it works for you, try rembg p input-folder output-folder on ten more.
