Who this is NOT for
It is not an app: it is a component a developer builds into another system. If you want to ask questions of your documents without writing code, look at AnythingLLM. And if most of what you search is text or audio, transcribing your recordings with Whisper and searching the text may be enough. It also came out on October 6, 2026: there is no community track record for this version yet, so if you need something proven this week, wait.
The usual mistake with these models is expecting them to answer. They do not answer, they find: they are the search layer under an assistant, not the assistant. What sets it apart from transcribing with Whisper and searching the text is that audio and video go straight into the search, with no transcript in between. That can matter when the important part is not spoken in words. It is modular: per the announcement, text-only work needs just the 270M-parameter core, with vision and audio added separately. Start there before loading the full model. The 20 million downloads figure belongs to the first version, not this one. And the cited benchmarks (MTEB Code, MAEB) are Google's, not ours.

Before installing anything, write down 3 real searches your team cannot solve today, such as 'the audio where the supplier confirmed the price' or 'the photo of the damaged order'. Hand them to whoever will integrate it: if none involve audio, images or video, start with the text-only part.
