If you run several accounts or want to put your Instagram numbers next to your sales, copying screenshots every week stops scaling. This Meta API delivers metrics programmatically for each post and for the whole professional account (comments, likes, views), so they can land in your own dashboard or report.
Who this is NOT for
If your Instagram account is personal, this won't work: the guide says it only returns data for professional (business or creator) accounts. If you're an agency showing accounts you don't own, you need Advanced Access, not standard access. If you run ads and want totals that include promoted interactions (total_comments, total_likes, total_views), you only get them through the Facebook login route. And if nobody on your side can build a login flow and a webhooks server, don't start here.
There are two routes, and picking the wrong one means redoing the work: Instagram login (graph.instagram.com) or Facebook login (graph.facebook.com). Per the guide, only the Facebook route returns totals that include paid interactions and the story_insights webhook. If you advertise, that's your route. Another trap few people read: live videos can only be read while the broadcast is running, so if you don't capture them then, the API won't give you that data later. Today, before writing any code, confirm your Instagram account is professional (business or creator). Then open the guide's 'Before you start' section and decide based on whether you run ads: if you do, take the Facebook login route; if not, the Instagram one.
