Jan lets you download models and chat with them offline on your computer. It also supports cloud providers: in that mode, your query leaves your device. Choose a local model and test it offline before relying on it.
Who this is NOT for
It is personal, not team-based: no users, no permissions. When you want shared AI for several people, the natural step up is Ollama + Open WebUI.
The Jan repository uses Apache-2.0, verified on October 10, 2026. Check the downloaded model's own license separately. For a first test, use a fictional customer message and request a draft; this is not a guarantee of accuracy or privacy across every configuration.
Your first step
Download Jan from jan.ai, choose and download a local model compatible with your computer, then disconnect the internet to check that the chat responds. This verifies offline operation; it does not audit every connection the app may make.
